The Dive Doctor

Navy Lieutenant Commander Mia Edgar adjusts a dive helmet while standing on a dock surrounded by marine gear and watercraft.

Take a Deep Breath

The surface fades away. All she can hear is her own breath — steady, focused. When she's beneath the waves, Lieutenant Commander Mia Edgar doesn't just dive. She answers a calling to serve, heal and protect those who dive into danger.

Mia’s journey began in Aurora, Colorado, where she first discovered her love of medicine and fitness as a high school athletic trainer. Later in college, drawn to communities that valued strength and resilience, she found her path through an ROTC program and into the Navy.

Stationed in Hawaii, Mia works as a Dive Doctor, caring for submariners, Divers and Special Operators. She keeps them mission-ready for some of the toughest challenges on Earth. It’s a job that demands both medical expertise and the physical grit to dive deep alongside them.

Mia treats everything from musculoskeletal injuries to complex diving conditions like decompression sickness, and even monitors radiation health for submariners operating nuclear reactors.

Every dive, every mission carries real risks. But by living and training like the people she serves, Mia understands their challenges firsthand — and keeps them safe beneath the surface.

A role that blends medicine with adventure, Navy Dive Doctors make it safe to dive the world over.

As a Navy Dive Doctor, you’ll work with submariners, Divers, and Special Operators by providing both primary care and specialized treatment for dive-related injuries like decompression sickness. You’ll train alongside your patients, qualify in military diving and help ensure operational readiness.
